CHRISTMAS IN BRITAIN
What is Christmas? It is a universal celebration of the birth of Jesus. People then celebrate the Mass-a church service for Christ. You probably didn’t know that it was in AD 440 that the Christian Church declared that a celebration day was to be 25th December.
How do the British celebrate Christmas? There are many activities before the celebration day. Christmas cards are sent to friends and relatives. , in which the birth of Jesus is presented and the visit of the Shepherd and Wise Men to Mary and Joseph are played at primary schools for parents and students. The first man to set up the nativity play was St. Frances of Assisi. He did that so that many illiterate people could understand the Christmas story.
Another activity preceding Christmas is that of decorating homes on Christmas Eve. Two colours are predominant:
Red-symbolizing the blood of Jesus
Green-symbolizing eternal life through Jesus
A Christmas tree usually occupies the central place in the living room. Children often love trimming (decorating) the tree.
Mistletoe is considered to be magical by the Druids who dedicated it to the Goddess of love so there is a custom of kissing under it. A couple that finds themselves under mistletoe should kiss and a male should give a berry from mistletoe to a girl.
Christmas stockings, specially made stockings are put in a visible place, often hung on a fireplace for small presents to be put in them.
Christmas Day
On Christmas Day people attend church services and Christmas dinner is served at midday. It includes roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, rich nutty stuffing, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon, and a lot of hot gravy, Christmas pudding. During dinner people crack Christmas crackers, a three -part paper fold with a paper king’s crown, some nuts and a present.
At 5 o’clock p.m.The Queen gives her speech to the nation. The first ever broadcast speech was made in 1957.
An important part of Christmas traditions are carolers, groups of people that walk down the street going from house to house singing Christmas carols. It is a tradition to give something to each of the carolers after they sing.
It is a custom to put wrapped presents under a Christmas tree to be opened on the Christmas morning. Children tend to believe that they are from the Santa Clause(Father Christmas) for the children who were good during the year, so children often leave cookies and milk to help himself while being at their house in which he gets through the chimney. Santa is believed to ride in sleighs, pulled by reindeer. Christmas is one of the most joyous holidays and a time when people spend time with their friends and family.
